Textura da Estrela White – 16,5+
Complex aroma from a complex mix of varieties, combined with what appears to be slightly reductive winemaking and an influential site. There’s a cedar note, a hint of creamy lees and oak spice, plus a smoky/toasty reductive quality from the winemaking. The fruit is ripe but not sweet, citrus and yellow plum, zesty grapefruit. The oak is noticeable, subtle, well integrated and attractive. On the palate, crisp, mouth-watering acidity giving piercing freshness, which is balanced by the depth of ripe, zesty fruit and the cedary notes from both Encruzado and the barrels. A little more oaky on the palate but not at all overpowered by it. Deep and long. Very youthful and should age well for further complexity. Gently chewy lees texture on the finish. (JH)
Textura PURA White 2018 – 17,0
A little more obvious oak than on the Textura da Estrela 2018, giving more ripe pear and spice notes. Just a little bit toasty and smoky, from both oak and, I think, subtly reductive winemaking. Delicious richness and freshness combined. Generous fruit ina bespoke oak overcoat with terrific freshness. You could enjoy this now but better to wait a little longer if you can. Mouth-wateringly persistent. (JH)
Pretexto Red 2018 – 16,0
Mid, lively cherry red. Such an inviting aroma that is all zippy red fruit, more raspberry than strawberry and a just a touch of stemmy freshness and herbs from the 30% of whole bunches. A stony edge and very little sign of the oak on the nose. You can taste the oak on the palate but it’s as much in the texture (smooth and rounded tannins) as in the flavour (sweet spice). But it’s the fruit that shines and dominates this wine as well as a delicate floral note and just-right freshness. Chalky, chewy at the very end. Moreish and needs food at the moment. Best served slightly cool. (JH)
Textura da Estrela Red 2018 – 16,5++
Mid, vibrant cherry red. Lovely Dão fragrance from this blend, reminding me of scrubland, more wild than domesticated: sappy red fruits, a herbal note from the stems and the floral influence of Touriga Nacional. Dry and chalky texture just starting on its journey towards silky. Really fine-grained tannins and such purity of fruit. Lithe, elegant and refined and still with the character of the region and the granite soils. Needs time and should age gracefully. (JH)
Textura PURA Red 2018 – 17,0
Mid cherry red, vibrant with a purplish cast. Beautifully scented, wild herbs, tangy red fruits, stony minerality, a little hit herbaceous but not green or unripe. Elegant and evanescent. On the palate, exceptionally fine if dry tannins, chalky, stony. Mouth-watering freshness, scented on the palate too with the same purity as the Textura da Estrela 2018 but even more intensity yet without weight. Beautifully balanced even now. Should age really well even though it is delicious now – but would need food. (JH)
